Miami Gardens, Florida – After Hurricane Ian’s devastation, millions of people still lack access to electricity, so South Florida is providing assistance to some of the hardest-hit communities.
Before traveling to Lee County, the storm’s eye, to aid those in need, a convoy of law enforcement agencies from all around South Florida gathered Saturday morning at Hard Rock Stadium.
“The goal is to keep us all together and get missions in and out of there for the next two weeks,” said a leader before the group was deployed.
Some of the law enforcement organizations providing supplies and first responders to assist law enforcement organizations in southwest Florida like Cape Coral Police and Fort Myers Police include Miami-Dade Police, Hollywood Police, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
“We’re going to make sure that they have as much as they need, and they are as comfortable as possible during this time of disaster,” said a leader with Miami-Dade County’s Association of Chiefs of Police, which organized the effort.
They are bringing equipment like mobile command centers and generators.
First responders will take any required action, including keeping an eye on supplies and responding to service requests as well as 911 calls.
“Whether it be passing out water, whether it be trying to extract different materials, equipment, we’re ready and prepared to go ahead and lend assistance,” said the leader from the Association of Chiefs of Police.
City of Miami Fire Rescue personnel went to the site of a Cape Coral home fire on Saturday. The fire was caused by a generator.
They are reportedly working on the west coast for two weeks. Teams will shuttle back and forth between South Florida and Lee County.
