Coral Springs, Florida – In the near future, information and signage will be installed in the city parks in Coral Springs to educate visitors that smoking is now prohibited in every area of the city parks.
According to a press release, the new ordinance that was approved by the city commissioners, which is designated as NO 2024-113, is applicable to all sections of any park that is owned and administered by the city of Coral Springs. It also takes into account all types of smoking, including electronic smoking devices, pipes, and cigarettes respectively.
In compliance with the “Florida Clean Air Act,” this would be the case.
A civil infraction citation may be given to any individual who is found to be in violation of the ordinance.
“The adoption of this ordinance keeps our parks free of tobacco, secondhand smoke, and cigarette butts, which enables the city to better maintain clean, healthy, and enjoyable green spaces within our 49 city-run parks,” Mayor Scott Brook said in a statement. “This ordinance also gives the city the ability to better maintain our parks overall.”
Before, the city legislation restricted smoking in parks, but only on playing fields and playgrounds, bleacher areas, dugouts, near team seating areas, concession areas, and restrooms.
This restriction was only in place for the places listed above.
According to the data provided by the federal government, cigarette smoking is proven to be responsible for more than 480,000 fatalities annually in the United States, while exposure to secondhand smoke is projected to be responsible for 41,000 deaths annually.
