North Miami, Florida, Florida – On Sunday, North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme sent out a statement to the community, stating that “unauthorized access” to his personal Gmail account was the cause of a hack that rendered city operations completely unfeasible.
He said that his passport, bank account, credit card information, and “private images” were “potentially compromised” by hackers, who also took “sensitive personal information.”
Desulme stated, “I want to be clear that this was a violation involving my personal accounts, not the City of North Miami’s.” “Although I have received a briefing on the matter, I am unable to confirm the scope of the compromised data at this time.”
“I have taken immediate steps to protect and secure my personal data,” according to Desulme.
He stated that as city employees “diligently” work to get all city functions online, North Miami City Hall would reopen for “limited services” on Monday morning.
“I am still totally dedicated to providing transparent and hardworking services to our community,” Desulme declared. “The city is also dedicated to making sure that all necessary precautions are taken to protect the integrity of our systems and their impact, as well as to providing updates as more information becomes available.”
The city’s probe into the breach is receiving assistance from federal officials. It’s unclear if private information belonging to city employees or residents was disclosed.
A hotline has been established for residents with inquiries in North Miami. Call 305-895-9804 for residents.
To Our Neighbors in North Miami: First and foremost, I would like to convey how appreciative I am for all of the calls, texts, and prayers I have been receiving in the last few days. I can never adequately thank you for your constant support.
Our city administration alerted me to a significant cybersecurity breach last Sunday that had impacted not just me personally but the entire city. As your mayor, I was the subject of this event, which led to illegal access to my personal Gmail accounts. Sensitive personal data, such as credit card numbers, bank account information, passport details, and private photos, may have been accessed as a result.
It is important to note that this was not a City of North Miami account; rather, it was one of mine. Despite having received a briefing on the matter, I have not yet seen the hacked data or been able to confirm its magnitude. I have nevertheless taken quick action to safeguard and secure my personal information.
Despite the fact that this tragedy has affected me, I am still totally committed to serving our community with honesty and integrity. Additionally, the city pledges to keep the public informed when new information becomes available and to make sure that all essential precautions are taken to safeguard the integrity of our systems and their effects.
On Monday, August 12, 2024, we will reopen City Hall with limited services during regular business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. While our staff works hard to get everything back up and running, we really appreciate your patience and understanding.
