Commission in Coral Springs will Decide on a $3.4 million contract for a new community center

Coral Springs, Florida – As part of a significant restoration of Kiwanis Park, Coral Springs commissioners will vote on Wednesday on whether to award a contractor more than $3.4 million to construct a new senior facility, according to municipal documents.

Records show that as part of a city plan to “satisfy the recreation and socialization needs of the growing population of senior citizens in Coral Springs” and other locals, the city-owned building would also serve as a general community center.

DiPompeo Construction Corp. of Pompano Beach, the lowest bidder out of the five firms who applied for the job, will be the recipient of the construction contract if commissioners so choose.

Records show that the city’s older Center at Sartory Hall is being used by older persons more frequently, necessitating the construction of a new facility.

According to the city’s plan, a portion of 500 Ramblewood Drive would need to be demolished in order to make room for the community center.

The new facility will also be available to non-seniors. According to city documents, the site is anticipated to include a new outdoor sports court, a remodeled kitchen for cooking lessons and demonstrations, a large room for meetings, classes, and programs, and a new hardwood sports floor for indoor games like pickleball and basketball.

Both city cash and COVID-19 stimulus monies will be used to finance the construction of the new community center, according to the documents.

The initiative is a part of the city’s upgrade of neighboring Kiwanis Park, which the city says recently underwent improvements that included the addition of a new pavilion and “nature-based playground.”

According to documents, the park will soon get improvements like a perimeter pathway, a new, raised boardwalk across a forested section, and the creation of a “learning garden.”
