Coral Springs crime spree ends with man facing 24 charges

Coral Springs, Florida – What started as a domestic dispute ended with Jeremy Evans facing two dozen charges following a wild chase through Coral Springs, police said.

Evans, 32, from Miami, went to his girlfriend’s apartment in the 11600 block of Northwest 39th Street about 11 a.m. Tuesday.

As she returned home from grocery shopping with her son, Evans confronted them, punched her repeatedly, threw her son down some stairs when the teenager tried to protect his mother, then Evans took her car keys and drove off, according to the arrest report.

A police officer spotted Evans running a red light and driving 82 mph in a 45 mph zone east on West Sample Road. The officer followed with lights and siren activated as Evans zigzagged in traffic and ran another red light at Coral Springs Drive, the report stated.

Evans rear-ended two vehicles at Coral Hills Drive. Two of three people in those vehicles were taken to Broward Health Coral Springs medical center, police said.

Evans ran from the scene of the crash and tried to break into several homes. He allegedly stole a bicycle from a garage but dropped it and ran when the resident chased him off at gunpoint.

Evans broke into another home through a back door and threatened a woman and her children. He allegedly snatched two cellphones and the keys to her SUV before driving off. A neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera recorded the carjacking on video.

Evans hit a tree in the 3900 block of University Drive. Ignoring police orders to stop, Evans ran along a footpath and stole a bicycle from a man standing on a foot bridge. Evans rode the bike into traffic on University Drive and was ultimately captured just before noon, police said.

Evans was booked into the Broward County Jail on charges that included domestic violence, armed home invasion, burglary, grand theft, auto theft, carjacking, fleeing/eluding police, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, resisting officers, driving without a valid license and insurance, and careless driving among other things, records show.

Broward Judge Deborah Carpenter-Toye set bonds totaling nearly $140,000 on Wednesday morning.

Evans was released from state prison almost a year ago after serving more than five years for burglary and grand theft in Miami-Dade County. He served two years before that for convictions on the same charges in an unrelated Miami-Dade case, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
