Coral Springs, Florida – Coral Springs has requested that Broward County and state transportation officials assess the intersection’s safety after a 6-year-old was killed in a deadly incident in May.
According to Lynne Martzall, the director of communications and marketing for the city, a review of the left turn signal modifications at the junction of Sample Road and NW 85 Avenue has been requested by the officials.
The city’s request for “signal phasing” is under the purview of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in relation to that portion of Sample Road, which is located directly west of Riverside Drive, according to Martzall.
“The city has provided FDOT the crash data informing them of the traffic fatality,” Martzall wrote in an email to TAPinto Coral Springs.
Harlow Tran died on May 5 when a Mercedes driven by Fort Lauderdale resident Chevon Dalton Graham, 26, drove away from a policeman attempting to pull him over and collided with a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse carrying two persons, including Harlow.
Police say she was ejected from the force of the crash despite being safely buckled up in her car seat.
After being transported by air to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, she passed away from her wounds.
It was at the junction, shortly after five o’clock in the evening.
Graham was accused of vehicular murder, aggravated fleeing and eluding resulting in death, reckless driving causing property damage, and knowingly having his driver’s license suspended.
According to Martzall, the state transportation department’s representatives are currently examining the city’s proposal.
According to her, the procedure could take up to six weeks and began earlier this month.
