Coral Springs police offers help in “Code Red” at Parkland middle school

Coral Springs, Florida – On Friday morning, a “code red” alarm at a Parkland middle school had Coral Springs police officers standing by to help.

Westglades Middle School on 11000 Holmberg Road in Parkland issued the alert shortly after 9:30 am.

School and police officials couldn’t immediately be reached to explain what triggered the alert, which goes into effect when there is potential or immediate threat on a campus and requires a full-scale lockdown of all classrooms.

Coral Springs Police Sgt. Ernesto Bruna said city officers were staging near Parkland in case they were needed to help out.

Broward Sheriff’s Office patrols Parkland.

By around 9:50 a.m. Westglades Middle School reduced the threat to a “code yellow,” which allows the school to continue with learning, but forbids outside activity.

By 10:30 a.m., the threat was called off.

As a precaution, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was placed on code yellow as well, according to principal Michelle Kefford.
