Authorities believe this is a domestic-related murder

“Preliminary information is leading detectives to believe that this may be a domestic-related murder,” Detective Andre Martin said adding that the victim, who was in his 20s, suffered a gunshot wound.

The victim, a young man in his 20s, suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Mourning the loss, a close friend identified the deceased as Eric Contreras, a student at Florida International University, where he studied construction management and was part of a fraternity.

In a shocking turn of events, the victim’s father, 52-year-old David Contreras, reportedly called 911 to confess to the shooting. At the time of the incident, the victim’s mother was reportedly not present at home.

The local community, described by resident Jaime Stramando as “very quiet,” has been shaken by this violence. Stramando noted the rarity of such events in the area, expressing disbelief and distress.

Highlighting the broader social issue underscored by this event, Detective Martin emphasized the reality of domestic violence, urging those in volatile domestic situations to seek help from available resources.

Florida International University acknowledged that Eric Contreras was a recent student, having enrolled in the summer of 2022 and attended classes up to the past summer. However, he was not registered for the fall semester of 2023.

David Contreras is currently facing a second-degree murder charge and has been placed in custody without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. As the investigation continues, detectives are calling upon the public for any information related to the case, directing tips to Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
