Florida reports 6,772 new COVID-19 cases, 44 more deaths

Florida health officials confirmed an increase of 6,772 COVID-19 cases Wednesday and 44 more resident deaths as a result of the virus.

It comes after a zig-zag of case increases over recent days. On Monday, Florida reported just 1,613 new cases, the smallest jump in six months, then posted an increase of 9,068 cases Tuesday, the largest leap since early February. That likely signaled a delay in some test results being processed.

After Wednesday’s increase, which was more in line with recent days, the state has now verified 2,141,686 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began and 34,164 resident deaths, according to the latest health department data.

Another 665 non-residents have died in Florida from COVID-19.

Coronavirus-related deaths reported in the past day include three in Miami-Dade County and 10 in Broward County.

There have been 87,523 resident hospitalizations attributed to the novel coronavirus in the state.

At least 7,584,736 people have received COVID-19 vaccines in Florida, with 4,678,987 people in the state fully vaccinated.

Miami-Dade has had 1,003,751 people receive shots, Broward has had 686,375, Monroe 29,611 and Palm Beach County 555,662, according to the latest numbers posted by the state.

The statewide positivity rate for yesterday’s testing was 7.44%.
