Get vaccinated or you might lose your job: List of US cities, states implementing vaccine mandates for their employees is reality

As the Delta variant is increasing the number of new Covid-19 cases across the country and the hospitals are under pressure again, several US cities, their administrations and agencies decided to require their workers to get vaccinated or potentially lose their job.

According to the New York Post, initially the idea behind this decision is to improve the vaccination rates that have stalled recently in the country. Few days ago, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a morning briefing that this is ‘becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated’, Business Insider reported.

The latest data provided by the CDC indicates that more than 99.5% of the Covid-19 deaths and more than 97% of the hospitalizations are unvaccinated people.

Following the good start in December, the vaccination process and rates have stalled recently and as of now, only 51% of the US population have receives at least one dose of the vaccine. Following the latest surge in numbers, some cities, their administrations and agencies decided to require workers to get vaccinated or they might be fired. New York, San Francisco and California are on the list.

New York

In a recent announcement, New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio said that a new rule put in force should improve the vaccination rates across the city limits.

According to him, all municipal workers — including teachers and police officers, are required to get vaccinated no later than mid-September or will have to undergo weekly Covid-19 testing.

“This is about what we need to do to bring back New York City, This is about keeping people safe,” de Blasio said Monday.

Just for a comparison how important this decision is, the city of New York has 340,000 workers and they are all affected by the latest decision. Not only testing, but municipal workers will also have to wear a mask while indoors.

San Francisco

San Francisco went even further with the vaccine requirement and vaccine mandate. According to the latest information the city will require all 35,000 city workers to get vaccinated or they might lose their job. San Francisco is believed to be the first city to mandate all the staff to get the shot against the virus.

As we have already seen in multiple occasions, there will be some exemptions for medical or religious reasons, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

California

The state of California will start to ask all state workers and health care employees for vaccine proof or they will have to undergo Covid-19 testing every week.

“An individual’s choice not to get vaccinated is now impacting the rest of us in a profound and devastating and deadly way,” Gov. Newsom said.

The requirement will get into effect on August 2.
