Highlights of April in Coral Springs: Community Unity Events, Earth Month, and Autism Awareness

Coral Springs, Florida – April is bursting at the seams with citywide celebrations and national awareness campaigns aimed at fostering a sense of community, solidarity, and pride as we approach spring.

April is National Autism Awareness Month. A Touch-A-Truck event will take place at Mullins Park (10150 NW 29th Street) on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m., in recognition of the special needs of this neighborhood. The various cars and tools in our emergency response fleet can be familiarized with by those with special needs or sensory difficulties. Parents and caregivers of people with cognitive impairments can sign up for the city’s special needs database at the event. During an emergency response, the database enables first responders to be aware of each person’s specific needs.

We also commemorate Earth Month in April. Our goal in Coral Springs is to guarantee a more sustainable future. We encourage homeowners to Recycle Right and take part in our new Household Composting program throughout the year, not just in April. Residents can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by taking part in these sustainable programs. Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., household composting can be dropped off at the Waste Transfer Station. Come celebrate Earthfest with us on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Sawgrass Nature Center (3000 Sportsplex Drive). Free nature exhibits, plant giveaways, and other activities are part of the event.

We are lucky to live in a community where the Teen Political Forum (TPF) gives our teenagers’ voices a platform. Teens are able to ask questions of state, county, and local political officials during this yearly event for high school students, which is organized by student government leaders in our city high schools. TPF is set to take place at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on Thursday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. The high schools with the most attendance at an event are eligible to win prizes worth up to $1,000.

All year long, our city provides programming for its citizens of all ages. The Mayor’s Chess Challenge will be held at Mullins Hall (10150 NW 29th Street) on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This month’s schedule also includes free tours of the Museum of Coral Springs History on April 27 and Open Play Chess on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 18. CoralSprings.gov/activities has details on all of the city’s activities.

The Commission Meetings for this month will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, and Wednesday, April 17. The public is welcome to attend as usual. CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.7, 725, and AT&T U-Verse channel 99 all broadcast the meetings.

Please give 954-344-5911 a ring if you would like to make an appointment with any of your city officials. Please follow the following on social media: Commissioner Joy Carter @CSCommissioner5, Mayor Scott Brook @CSCommissioner1, Vice Mayor Shawn Cerra @CSCommissioner2, Commissioner Nancy Metayer Bowen @CSCommissioner3, and Commissioner Joshua Simmons @CSCommissioner 4.
