Coral Springs, Florida – When the historic Coral Springs “Covered Bridge” closed last month after getting struck by a truck, it wasn’t the first time the bridge was damaged by a vehicle.
Far from it.
The bridge on NW 95 Avenue has been hit six times in the past 10 years, according to city records.
The latest closing of the 40-foot bridge happened on Sept. 24 after a vehicle hit the top of the bridge and drove off.
Police determined it was struck by a driver who was towing an excavator on a trailer, officials said.
The iconic bridge, built in 1964, will be closed for up to six weeks for repairs.
Crews will be replacing the main support beam on the south side, which was damaged, along with a few roof trusses.
