Miami Beach, Florida – Several protestors, including Rob Prince, Shari Kline, and Vik Pagan, expressed support for the woman who was attacked and sexually assaulted while rollerblading on Miami Beach.
There were bikes, skateboards, and rollerblades. A few were strollers and runners. Their goal was to demonstrate their will to reclaim a walk by the shore that no longer felt secure.
“For a lot of us it’s a source of therapy and peace, and unfortunately what happened to the victim last week crushed us,” Prince said.
After Miami Beach police recognized Keith Hill, 31, as the man who attacked and sexually assaulted a woman while she was rollerblading, Hollywood police detained Hill. Hill is a registered sexual predator in Illinois.
“She wasn’t doing anything wrong,” Kline said. “She was minding her own business, enjoying her time, and it wasn’t her fault.”
According to Prince, Kline, and Pagan, it was critical that they assisted in planning the protest so that the victim would know she wasn’t alone and that the city’s public areas and feeling of community could be restored.
“Buddy system, looking out for each other, not just our friends, but people we don’t know, paying attention, seeing when people look unsafe,” Kline said.
Prince claimed that upon discovering the woman’s victimization, he felt helpless. He is one of the protestors who wants to make every effort to prevent such a tragedy from occurring in Miami Beach.
“It could be my sisters, it could be my cousins, it could be my niece, it could be my friends — a big majority of my crew are women,” Prince said. “If they’re not safe, I’m not safe.”
