Fort Lauderdale, Florida – After the ceiling of Fort Lauderdale’s home came crashing down following bad weather in the area late Thursday night, a family is looking for a new place to stay.
According to the home’s owner, Keia Jones, she first heard water coming down from the ceiling of the home located in the 300 block of SW 19th Street around 9 p.m. Thursday, and later she heard more dripping around 1 a.m. Friday.
“When I went to check the window, there were drops falling on me from the celling,” Jones added.
According to Jones, seconds after she woke her boyfriend up, the ceiling collapsed.
No one inside the home was injured.
“Man, it’s scary,” Jones said. “It’s really, really scary.”
The family does not have the transportation to leave at this time, Jones said.
“It’s still a lot of work to be done,” said Jeffrey Clark, who is Jones’ boyfriend. “It’s damage. You can’t live in it.”
A team from Kruger Disaster Recovery donated sandbags and a tarp to help while the home is repaired. The American Red Cross is helping the family with finding a new place to stay.
While the city of Miami received nearly four inches of rain, Fort Lauderdale received nearly four and a half inches of rain since Thursday.
