Everglades fires continue pushing smoke trough weekend

Coral Springs, Florida – Winds were expected to pick up on Saturday and push more smoke across the region as ash from fires in the Everglades continues to rain down on Coral Springs and western Broward County.

According to Florida Forest Service, on Friday, one of three brush fires in the Everglades, started by lightning strikes on Wednesday, had burned more than 6,000 acres in Broward County.

The other two fires in Palm Beach County torched more than 16,000 acres, according to the forest service.

On Friday, the fire service reported that about 20 percent of the fires were contained.

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, on Saturday, the air quality in the Coral Springs area was listed as moderate because of the smoky conditions.
