Congressman Representing Coral Springs Pushes For Local Gun Buyback Initiatives

CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Have a few guns to sell in Coral Springs? Proposed federal legislation would make it easier to organize local gun buyback initiatives.
A bill introduced Wednesday in the U.S House of Representatives — co-sponsored by Rep. Ted Deutch (FL-22) who represents Coral Springs — would authorize new matching grants available for local law enforcement agencies to help offset costs of buyback programs, according to a news release from Deutch’s office.
In addition, the “Buyback Our Safety Act,” also sponsored by Reps. Mike Quigley (IL-05) and Gerry Connolly (VA-11), would require the Department of Justice to report back to Congress on the success of the grant program.
“Unwanted firearms in the home can lead to unintended tragedies,” Deutch said in the news release. “Gun buyback programs help prevent gun-related accidents at home, including by children, and reduce the chance of these guns ending up in the wrong hands. This is a matter of public safety.”
What happens next to the legislation wasn’t explained in the news release.
