Coral Springs Offers Free “Stop the Bleed” Training To Help Gunshot And Other Victims

CORAL SPRINGS, FL – As the nation grapples with mass shootings, Coral Springs is joining other cities, schools, and other organizations to offer training to help in a bleeding emergency before emergency crews arrive.
On Thursday, the city will take part in the National STOP THE BLEED® Day by offering free classes to stop traumatic bleeding.
There’s been a national push for Stop the Bleed campaigns following the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012 and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018.
The idea is that it only takes three to five minutes for a gunshot victim to bleed out. But if the wound isn’t fatal, such as a person’s leg or arm was shot, stopping the bleed can save the person’s life.
Local leaders in Broward County have trained teachers and put bleeding control kits in public schools.
In 2018, Coral Springs revised an ordinance to include the requirement of such kits for local businesses. After that, STOP THE BLEED® kits were provided to businesses, free of charge, and training courses were offered through the Coral Springs Regional Institute of Public Safety.
“Coral Springs remains committed to life safety education for our residents and business owners,” Coral Springs Fire Chief Michael McNally said on a news release. “Implementing changes to our AED (automated external defibrillator) ordinance to include life-saving equipment was revolutionary and reaffirmed our efforts to educate and empower citizens to take action in saving a life when seconds count.”
