Broward Schools Officials searching for thousands of students who haven’t enrolled in school
Coral Springs, Florida – This weekend school officials will be looking for thousands of Broward County Public School students who have not enrolled in the current school year.
Hundreds of school district staff and teachers union members will canvass the county in search of students who haven’t signed up for school, on Saturday and Sunday.
According to Vickie Cartwright, the district’s interim superintendent, they will go door-to-door in neighborhoods wearing blue shirts with the message “Ready For You!”
“Our teachers have one goal, and that’s to educate our students, so we need you to help get them back to our classrooms,” Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco said.
According to Fusco, the union received a grant from the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association to partner with the school district to “to bring our kids back to school.”
Fusco didn’t say how much the grant is for or what it will specifically pay for. Cartwright and Fusco also didn’t say what neighborhoods teachers and staff will visit this weekend or why so many students have not enrolled in schools.
What is the number of students registered in Broward County Public Schools this year could not be determined.
There were 271,517 students enrolled in 327 schools during the 2016 – 2017 school years, according to the school district’s Wikipedia page.
District officials are asking the public to call 754-321-1757 to report students who aren’t signed up for school.
