New interactive sculpture expected in Coral Springs
Coral Springs, Florida – The $97,000 interactive orchid sculpture is expected to be set up next month at the city’s Art Walk on NW 31 Court.
According to the design, the sculpture by artist William Nemitoff will allow people to sit, stand or jump on its leaves.
The 16-foot-tall piece made out of galvanized steel will also change colors depending on the time of day and create sounds depending on who is sitting on it.
The costs for the sculpture are coming out of the city’s public art funds that are collected from impact fees on new developments or redevelopment projects, approved by the City Commission last summer.
According to officials, there will be no tax dollars used to purchase the art piece.
The city’s Public Art Committee oversees the funds that pay for new public art sculptures and other art-related projects in the city.
The group proposed a $272,400 budget for the coming fiscal year which includes $150,000 for a 20th-anniversary piece/project, at the committee’s recent meeting.
Coalescence will go in a place where Overflowing Blessings, an 8-foot-tall fiberglass piece covered in acrylic paint, is located. Overflowing Blessings ) is set up temporarily, and it will be up to the art committee and City Commission to decide if it or any of the three other temporary pieces on display now the downtown will be purchased and installed permanently somewhere in the city.
