Coral Springs, Florida – After a complaint-driven inspection revealed multiple infractions, including rotten food, insect infestations, and general sanitary problems, a Sonic Drive-In in Coral Springs was closed for the second time since November.

According to inspection reports, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation found 17 health code violations at Sonic at 6200 West Sample Road on December 27.

Food contamination, including mold-like growth on lemons and limes and dead flies discovered in the ice cream mix, was one of the infractions that resulted in stop-sale orders. Additionally, inspectors observed problems with food temperature in a number of food items.

Live flies were also discovered by inspectors in the cooking area, and there was a buildup of green and black mold-like materials within the ice bin and ice machine, which apparently raised urgent worries about food safety.

The findings also made extensive reference to Sonic’s poor sanitation, citing issues with food scraps, dirty walls and floors, and grease buildup behind equipment and along prep tables. The walk-in cooler’s ceiling was also covered in mold-like materials, while the floor was littered with plastic debris and leftover drinks.

The investigation also pointed out that the kitchen’s surfaces were filthy, with oil on the expo line, syrup on the ice cream maker, and remnants of old food on prep tables.

The examination reveals that the closure and recurring problems point to a lack of managerial oversight, which is further supported by reports that the person in charge lacked documentation of their food manager accreditation.

Before the restaurant can reopen, Sonic must go through follow-up inspections to see if the problems have been fixed.
