Police make arrest in fatal stabbing of woman outside Broward Health Coral Springs
Coral Springs, Florida – Police have made an arrest after a woman was fatally stabbed Tuesday morning in the parking lot of Broward Health Coral Springs.
A woman was transported from the scene at 3000 Coral Hills Drive to Broward Health North’s trauma center, but she did not survive.
The victim was identified as 26-year-old Merin Joy.
Coral Springs police say they responded to the scene just after 7:30 Tuesday morning.
Witnesses say the woman was stabbed several times, and that the person responsible had taken off.
A Local 10 News crew was at the scene as detectives scoured the area for evidence, eventually towing away a Toyota SUV.
Police believe the stabbing was part of a domestic dispute between Joy and the suspect, who police identified as 34-year-old Philip Mathew of Wixon, Michigan.
Police said they found him at a hotel in Coral Springs. He was transported to a nearby hospital after he was found with a self-inflicted knife wound.
Mathew is being charged with first degree murder.
