Coral Springs, Florida – After investigators discovered that he and his spouse had submitted false claims on losses purportedly caused by Hurricane Irma, a Coral Springs man is charged with insurance fraud.

The couple, identified as Alberto and Goldie Cuba, claimed to have caused over $90,000 in damages to their home, including a screen enclosure they later acknowledged, but investigators found that the claim was false, according to a Coral Springs Police Department report that detailed the years-long investigation into the case.

According to records, the investigation started on November 6, 2019, when the Cubas submitted their claim to Olympus Insurance. Their roof, skylight, ceilings, and a screen enclosure that supposedly covered their pool prior to the hurricane were all allegedly damaged, according to the lawsuit.

According to inspection reports, a preliminary examination carried out in November 2019 revealed no proof of a screen enclosure at their residence close to the 2500 block of Northwest 88th Terrace, nor any records attesting to its removal.

The property had not had a pool enclosure for more than ten years, according to aerial data from 2005, which was verified by a follow-up inspection in February 2020.

Additionally, inspectors discovered no evidence of wind damage to the skylight or roof in the report.

The Cubas maintained in sworn statements during a July 2020 interview that Hurricane Irma had wrecked their pool enclosure, saying that unidentified people later cleared the debris, despite this proof, according to interview records in the report.

According to investigation findings, the couple acknowledged lying about the enclosure in order to boost their insurance payment in a follow-up interview in March 2024. Additionally, they said that although their public adjuster was aware that the enclosure had been taken out in 2005, they were nonetheless urged to include it in the claim.

Alberto was taken into custody and taken to the Broward County Main Jail on December 17. He then posted a $10,000 bond and was freed.
